Botosani is the seat of the county with the same name, but also its largest city (with a population of 116 110 inhabitants). The town's first documented mention was in 1350. During the medieval period and the beginning of the modern period (between the 14th and 19th centuries) Botosani was a thriving market of Moldavia, located where important trade routes intersected.
The city was also an important craft centre. However, since the last decades of the 19th century, the city will experience a period of economic decline, due to the construction of new rail routes in the neighboring cities (Suceava and Dorohoi). From this point, the mainly urban commercial activity shifted towards the agriculture industry.
Did you know that:
- The name Botosani comes from a gentleman of Moldova, named Botas
- Saint George Church is founded by Lady Helen (wife of Petru Rares) in 1551?
- The square in the city center was lit with candles in 1832?
Botosani, whose main activity is trade, was a cosmopolitan city, whose merchants left behind important residential buildings, the historic center of the city being extraordinary from an architectural point of view. The other attractions in the city can be grouped as following: churches (Agafton Monastery, Vorona Monastery, Lipovenian Church, St. Nicholas Church and the Church of Saint George), museums (Botosani Museum, Ethnography museum) and Mihai Eminescu Park (set up in 1869, on its territory there is an artificial lake). Mihai Eminescu used to walk through this park, the park still preserves today a few trees from that time).
