Galati is the seat of the county with the same name and also its largest city. In the Middle Age, Galati was in a continuous development, because after Chilia and White Castle (in 1484) and Braila (in 1540) were conquered by the Turks, Galati will remain the only commercial port of the Principality of Moldavia.
Like Braila, Galati was burnt down during the Russian-Turkish wars (18th- 19th centuries) that devastated the southeastern area of the current Romanian territory. The city is almost joint with the neighboring town (Braila) so that locals say jokingly that there is actually a single city named Galati-Braila.
Did you know that:
- Galati steel plant was built in 1961 being at that time the largest one in Europe?
- The first flight in Romania took place in 1926 between Galati and Bucharest?
- The "Two Old Ladies" neighboorhood in Galati is named after a tragic murder that took place in 1980 on the present territory of the city?
In Galati there is a great number of tourist attractions. Cataloguing them can be done as following: museums (The Museum of Natural Sciences, The Museum of History, The Visual Art Museum, The Village Museum, The Medals, Philately and Numismatic Museum and the Collections House), churches (of which we will mention The Fortified Church of the Holy Virgin, the Synagogue, the Greek Church), historic buildings (th Administrative Palace, Palace of Navigation, Robescu House, Costache Negri House and Lambrinidi House) and numerous relaxation and promenade areas (the Danube promenade, the Public Garden, the Botanical Garden, the Zoological Garden and a series of 6 parks).
