Targoviste is the seat of Dambovita county and its largest city. It has a population of about 89,000 and it is situated in a plain area in the south of the country. Much of the history of The Romanian Country links to this city, as from 1396 and until 1714 Targoviste was the capital of the kingdom.

Because of this status, for three centuries, Targoviste was one of the most important economic, military and cultural centres in southern Romania.

As the name suggests, Targoviste was an important commercial centre during the medieval period. Goods brought from three continents were exchanged here. The name comes from Slavic, where the term torgovâi means trade, commerce.

Did you know that:

- Vlad Tepes had his fortress in Targoviste?
- Nicolae Ceausescu and Elena Ceausescu were found and executed in December 1989 in Targoviste?
- The Royal Court on the territory of Targoviste is the best preserved Aulic fortress on the territory of Romania?
- Gara de Nord train station in Bucharest was originally called Targoviste?

Targoviste is located in the southeastern part of the country, in the subdivision of the Romanian Plain with the same name. The city is crossed by Ialomita river. The climate is temperate with annual averages and precipitations specific to the plain area. Due to the favorable road network, from Targoviste you can reach Bucharest and Ploiesti in less than an hour.

The former capital of The Romanian Country still keeps the ruins of the citadel today. The ruins of the castle are open to visitors, and defensive walls and guard towers were recently refurbished so that the Chindia Tower (built by Vlad Tepes) offers the visitors a panoramic view over the city. In the vicinity of the city there is a recreational area in which there are a zoo, a lake with a pier and many green areas designed for promenade or for the children to play.

Near the ruins there is the Royal Church, built around 1580, during the reign of Constantin Brancoveanu. The painting in the church dates from the 18th century (1702) and is was made by the painter Constantinos.
