Braila is the seat of the county with the same name and it is located in the south-east of the country, on the left bank of the Danube. The city was occupied by the Turkish army in 1540, and was almost entirely under Ottoman rule until 1829 when through the Peace of Adrianople, Braila returns to The Romanian Country.
A passenger episode is the liberation of Braila from the Ottomans in 1595 when Michael the Brave brings Braila back briefly between the borders of The Romanian Country and builds the church of St Nicholas in the town. After returning under Romanian domination (in 1829) Braila developed, so in the early 20th century it reached its maximum development period (when the city was an important cargo port, accesible to small and medium ships).
Did you know that:
- Little Lake Natural Park of Braila, also called the second Danube Delta area is the last remaining natural flooding area on the lower Danube?
- The phrase "how the blind man found Braila" comes from the German word "brille" (which means "glasses"), not being linked to the city?
Today we can visit numerous churches in Braila (such as the Greek Church and the Church of the Holy Archangels), museums, like the Museum of Braila (divided into two sections - art and natural sciences) or Emilia Dumitrescu Art Gallery.
Also in Braila there is a number of recreational areas such as the Public Garden, the Zoo or the Monument Park. And if we want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, we can take a walk on the Danube promenade, or a trip to the Salt Lake resort or on the Small Island of Braila.
